Adoption/Non Parental Custody/De Facto Parents

Adopting a child brings happiness to a family, but, a biological parent’s change of heart or unexpected events can turn a joyous occasion into a nightmare. On the other hand, sometimes adoption is not the answer but non-parental custody better fits a particular family due to parental unfitness or harmful environments. Other times, a person is so involved in a child's life the person attains the status of de facto parent. D.C. assists families with the complex often frustrating legal procedures of the adoption, non parental custody, and de facto parent process.

Pre-Nuptial, Separation, and Status Agreements
When you marry, or choose to live as married, you may not foresee potential problems that can lead to dissolution of the relationship. D.C. expects the unexpected and drafts agreements to protect your interests and alleviate some of the stress should the relationship end. D.C. also challenges unfair and inequitable agreements when appropriate to do so.

Dissolution of Marriage/Legal Separation/Committed Domestic Relationships
Through confidential mediation or through litigation, D.C. seeks to obtain the best possible settlement or judgment for individuals going through a dissolution of marriage, a legal separation or the dissolution of a marital like realtionship or domestic partnership, including fair distribution of assets, appropriate spousal/partner and/or child support and parenting plans which respect a parent's parental autonomy and a child's best interests.

Parenting Plans/Residential Schedules
For many people, child placement is the most heart-wrenching issue for resolution. D.C. advocates for your parental rights, recognizing your right to rear your child is deeply embedded in our history and culture. Parental autonomy in child rearing is identified as a fundamental liberty interest rooted in the right to privacy. No parent should miss the important milestones in his/her child’s life. D.C. advocates for your opportunity to spend quality time with your child to encourage his/her strong growth and development.

Child Support
Parents share in the responsibility of supporting their children. D.C upholds your child’s right to receive approrpiate financial support required for a healthy, happy upbringing, while advocating the financial burden be divided fairly and equitably between all parents.

Spousal Support
Often times when a marriage dissolves or spouses or partners separate one spouse or partner needs financial assistance to rehabilitate, re-educate, and/or obtain necessary skills. Other times a spouse or partner needs adequate compensation to achieve an equitable resolution. D.C. helps to establish fair and equitable spousal support when allowed by law.

Post-Decree Support Modification
Sometimes the unexpected happens — a lost job or a sudden injury. Other times the status quo simply changes as life moves forward. Yet, you remain obligated to pay spousal and/or child support at a previously determined amount, based on different factors, despite your changed financial circumstances. D.C. is available to pursue a modification of your support orders to bring the orders closer to the present reality.

Enforcement of Orders
If your former spouse or partner fails to abide by legal obligations set forth in a court's decrees and orders, D.C. leads you through the legal channels to enforce the court’s decrees and orders. Often times enforcement addresses child support, spousal support, property division, debt payment and parenting plans.

Paternity
D.C. understands the unique role science can fill in child placement and child support cases. A positive paternity test can help you prove your fatherhood so you can unite with your biological child and affirm your claims to residential time. Alternatively, a paternity test can conclusively prove you are not a child's biological parent. If you are a parent seeking establishment or dis-establishment of paternity, D.C. guides you through the complex court proceedings.

Child Protective Services Investigations
When the government wrongfully interferes with your parental rights, you need an advocate who understands the bureaucracy.  D.C. is skilled at maneuvering through the complex laws of Washington to protect your parental rights and your child’s future from wrongful state interference. D.C. understands the right to autonomous family privacy encompasses the basic and fundamental right of a parent to make decisions regarding his/her child without state interference and without imposition of state values which may significantly differ from a parent's own.

Domestic Violence (Intimate Partner Violence)
When somebody emotionally, psychologically or physically abuses you, it is a shocking, frightening and overwhelming experience. If you are a victim of domestic violence, you have legal protections available to you. D.C. will lead you through the process of protecting yourself and your family from your abuser. D.C. also recognizes sometimes innocent people are accused of abuse. He defends wrongly accused individuals against false allegations in the civil, administrative, and criminal forums.
